Letter example
Dear Minister, Dear Mayor,
I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed high rise retirement development that’s planned for Lota House, 162 Oceana Terrace Lota.
Anglicare and Village Retirement Group have applied to build 4, five and six storey towers in a low density suburb that includes character overlays.
But this is just Stage 1. Anglicare have told us that in stage 2 they want to build another four towers – and what they build in stage 2 will depend on what they get approval for in Stage 1. So can we expect more six storey towers?
How will the roads cope?
A development of this density shows complete disregard for the character of our suburb, it is not in keeping with the Wynnum Manly Neighbourhood Plan and breaches heritage protection .
Lota House and its woodland are heritage listed. They are important to us. The woodland would be destroyed if this development goes ahead and Lota House would be dwarfed. The surrounding towers would be twice as high as our heritage listed building. Lota House would be lost to us forever. Who is protecting our history?
Anglicare and Village Retirement Group have said that they will build tower by tower – as one sells the others will be built. That means years of continuous noise, traffic and dust from, trucks, cranes, graders, chain saws, cement trucks etc. This will be imposed, not just on us as neighbours, but also on the elderly residents of Lota House.
City Plan
And we could see more of this happening around Brisbane. Mr Mayor, your Retirement and Aged Care Amendments to the City Plan will make it easier for developers to build high rise retirement villages. Under the amendments, such developments will be fast tracked, codes will be simplified, land rezoned without consultation and there will by reductions of 33 per cent on infrastructure costs for the developers.
The community will have no right to object. This is not just or fair. Developers won’t be building the aged care that is needed, they will be building high rise retirement villages for profit.
If the amendments are adopted by the council (and the State Government) we will see many more Lota House style issues. And if this happens, there will be a political backlash. It is starting already.
Would you kindly address the questions I have raised in my letter.
Thank you for your time.
